Why is FFP given to patients with severe liver disease?

To expand volume

To correct coagulopathy

In severe liver disease, the liver’s ability to produce clotting factors is markedly reduced, creating a tendency to bleed (coagulopathy) with prolonged coagulation tests. Fresh frozen plasma provides the actual clotting factors in transfused plasma, helping the coagulation cascade function again. By replenishing the factors, FFP helps to stop or prevent bleeding and is especially important before invasive procedures or during active bleeding. It’s not used to treat infection or to replace red blood cells, and while it adds some volume, the main purpose here is to correct the coagulopathy caused by impaired factor synthesis in the liver.
